2016 - Ongoing

Offshore Wind Industry - United States

Provide specialist consulting services to the rapidly evolving U.S offshore wind industry.

  • Member of American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) working groups & subcommittees
  • Participate in detailed review of Offshore Compliance Recommended Practices (OCRP) 2012
  • Lead development of T&I content for OCRP review & coordinate close-out of all comments
  • Cultivate trans-Atlantic collaboration through Business Network for Offshore Wind (BNOW)
  • Facilitate & support US market entry & entity establishment for UK-based consulting firm
  • Conduct maritime operations study of prospective LNG terminal under subcontract to DNV-GL
  • Team with MARIN & ABS on NOWRDC-funded project for comparative feeder operabilty study
  • Enlist & coordinate committed support of 27 industry stakeholders for NOWRDC feeder study
  • Lead development of innovative cloud-based non-co-located training delivery system
  • Showcase transportable Mixed Reality simulation system at various tradehows & institutions
  • Contract to EU-based developer for detailed ports & logisitics studies in the New York Bight

2010 - 2016

Offshore Wind Industry - Europe

Part of small multi-discipline team assigned to establish new business unit for global conglomerate.

  • Undertake pre-acquisition technical & operational due diligence of target start-up entity
  • Consult with prospective clients & contractors to establish operational vessel requirements
  • Optimize operational design of world's largest Windfarm Installation Vessels (WIVs) to date
  • Develop customized 3D vessel model for deck load planning & 1,200T crane lift verification
  • Establish state-of-the-art office facility with specialized data systems & collaboration tools
  • Implement all vessel-related management systems & processes for first-of-type vessel class
  • Identify necessary post-delivery vessel modification to ensure operational loading integrity
  • Carry out FEED study with crane OEM for load control system on 1,200T Main Crane
  • Identify, evaluate & implement customized crew management database & planning software
  • Develop specialized systems to mitigate operational seabed risk from obstructions & scour
  • Represent company in forums at IMCA and IMO related to Offshore Renewable Energy
  • Manage all aspects of recruitment, training and welfare of 175 vessel-based personnel
  • Oversee own-power vessel delivery from Korea & deployment into European-based projects
  • Liaise with clients, contractors & other stakeholders for vessels' entry into service

Marine Training Centre

Lead a global team of technical specialists, subject matter experts, support personnel & contractors to establish the Swire Marine Training Centre (SMTC) in Singapore.

  • Conceptualize & develop comprehensive design of bespoke company-specific training facility
  • Identify, secure & remodel suitable property, including offsite IT backup infrastructure
  • Compile full technical specification, deliverable requirements & contractual framework
  • Guide & coordinate integrated product teams across UK, Europe, USA & Singapore
  • Optimise projection systems within existing structure for 360 horizontal x 80 vertical FOV
  • Configure adaptable auditorium for 10 desktop bridge simulators / 30 clear-desk positions
  • Develop, build & commission world-leading offshore anchor handling & DP simulators
  • Validate full Bridge & Engine Room functionality for seven existing vessel types
  • Verify performance against real-world sea trial data & engineering system characteristics

Submarine Support & Rescue Vessel

Lead in-house team of consortium partnership with Rolls Royce Submarines (UK) in developing a highly specialized technical proposal for a state-of-the-art Submarine Support and Rescue Vessel (SSRV), to support a range of mission-critical Naval operations for the Government of Singapore.

1999 - 2005

Offshore Oil & Gas Industry

Deployed as Chief Officer for 1 year & then as Master on Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) in South East Asia, Indian Subcontinent and Middle East areas of operation.

  • Safe, efficient & cost-effective operations supporting exploration & production activities
  • Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessels up to 65m LOA / 1,590GT / 8,160bhp
  • Short & long-range coastal & deep sea tows, anchor handling, & installation resupply
  • Rig moves, pipelay, seabed survey, safety standby, blowout response & rig preservation
  • Develop & implement vessel-specific operating procedures & project execution guidelines
  • Identify & recommend improvements to enhance vessel capability & onboard safety systems
  • Manage vessel maintenance & repair schedules, to ensure ongoing staturory compliance
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors, regulatory authorities & enforcement agencies

Seconded for 12 months as Safety Captain covering the South East Asia region.

  • Extensive travel within the region to visit clients, agents, fleet units & outstation offices
  • Asssit in development & implemention of fleet-wide Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Conduct internal ISM audits & management inspections of vessels & shore-based facilities
  • Carry out incident/accident investigations, analyse findings & compile management reports

1996 - 1998

HMS Pandora Maritime Archaeology Expeditions

Provide maritime consulting services & deploy as expedition Master for Queensland Museum's seasonal deployments to a remote historic wreck site on the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef.

  • Isolated site located approximately 90nm ESE from the tip of Cape York penninsular
  • Comprehensive operational & logistics planning for up to 40 team members for up to 45 days
  • Undertake surface-supply diving operations to support seabed excavation & artefact recovery
  • Manage operational risk of deployments during Southern Hemisphere cyclone season
  • Work with Naval Architect to redesign site's mooring system for increased holding capacity
  • Incorporate installation of additional mooring components into tight deployment schedule
  • Reconfigure deck arrangement to include liquid oxygen solution for diver decompression
